F*ck the Other Guy!
So I get it… It’s time for “change”. I’m gonna vote Obama just like the next liberal blogger. I’m just a little curious why.
I still don’t think McCain is really that much different or worse than Obama. Their economic plans are similar, I mean McCain is a little more adamant about staying in Iraq—but it’s not like Obama has claimed we’ll be out of there on November 5th either. Obama is definitely less creepy than McCain and I think the universal healthcare system is a better idea than McCain’s “take your $5,000 wherever you want!” plan. They were both in favor of “The Great Economic Mulligan of ‘08” which really it would be stupid to be against and still seek re-election this year. That’d be like coming out and saying Bush wasn’t all that bad on November 3rd. But what the fuck is up with reaching across party lines?
FYI, back in the day—not only did Democrats and Republicans hate each other, factions within the Democrats hated each other! Now suddenly it’s a big deal that Americans dislike people simply because of differing opinions on policy?
There’s a reason we don’t reach across party lines… The other party is wrong! It’s not up to Congress to come together and quid pro quo bills into law (even though they’ve always done it, but mainstreaming it and making us like it sounds like a bad idea). Whatever bill gets the most support passes. It moves on to the next round. Huzzah! If American’s feel that the bill was a bad idea—boo! If you get more “boo” than “huzzah” we vote you out and someone else gets a try. This “all in together” approach to Congress turns it more into an exclusive cult of decision makers than it already is. If they all vote together in a compromising fashion then we’ve got a body of dictators. Americans need these people at one another’s throat to defend our vote.
The bigger picture of who Americans vote into Congress and what decisions they make with their time in office is what makes “compromise”. If we get a Senate that votes for gay marriage and we dislike it, next election we get rid of some of those senators and suddenly gay divorce becomes a lot more attractive. Is it right? Ehh… It’s a compromise that doesn’t interfere with our rights as voters.
This new “compromise” doesn’t mean these congressmen are going to sit around and reach a logical middle ground anyway. More likely than not they’re going to come up with bills that minimize the change they would have seen in a time period where I just had to water my bill down with earmarks to get it through. Then they’ll cover it with earmarks anyway. Instead of blacks getting the vote—we’ll get the 4/5ths Compromise and a bridge in Alaska.
Presidents don’t have to cross party lines anyway. Their Legislative and Executive are warring branches that hate each other, the President doesn’t get a vote in Congress—his interaction with them isn’t about having a hands on role in their giant collusion against the American people. He sits in an Oval Office and vetoes them when they’ve gone too far.
Could the country stand to be a little less partisan? Yes. Do we need Senators holding hands? No. Do we need the President hanging out with Congressmen? HELL NO!
